Surviving Is Boring!

File Jul 06, 8 41 56 PM“Bethany, today you officially enter remission status!”

My doctors words were said with pure excitement as they flowed from his smiling lips. His eyes communicated hope and welcomed me into a new phase of my life. My cancer was in remission. This was that moment I had been dreaming about, but never thought would ever come to be.

As I sat on the on the all too familiar plush examination table that day, so many emotions took over residence in my body. I felt happy, yet confused. Excited yet lost. Cold and warm. I was no longer sick, but didn’t exactly feel well.

I was stuck.

Oh, I was a survivor, no doubt. By the grace of God, my life was spared and somehow I was given this amazing second breath of life. I had lost two dear friends during my battle. No way could I take this second for granted.

I felt the urge to move forward, but I had no clue what to move forward to.

What do survivors do?

  • Survivors constantly live in the past
  • Survivors define themselves on what they have overcome
  • Survivors face challenges by focusing on the end result
  • Survivors cannot function without their story
As my doctor appointments began to space out dramatically from my weekly routine, my entire life began to change. My calendar squares started to become empty. My arms began to heal from the various bruises from routine blood draws. I purchased a brush for the first time in over a year! Oh my goodness, I actually had hair longer than peace fuzz!
But I felt lost.
I still felt stuck.
Even though the circumstances of my life seemed to be pushing me forward, I just could not move out of my survivor mindset. I had been given a story. I lived through so much pain. I had been granted a second chance. Now what?
Truthfully, surviving is boring. Your story is great. But if you live your life to tell your story, it ends there. Your chapter is complete. You survived.
But, what about those of us that want to do more?
What about those of us that peer under the lighted curtains in our bedroom wanting more out of life than just reliving our past?
What about those of us that truly believe God isn’t done writing His story through us?
What about our next and greatest chapter?
There is more. God is far from done with you! Thank God!
See Bethany, I have come to save you. You will trust in Me and not be afraid. I, the LORD GOD am your strength and your song; Bethany, I have given you victory. With joy you will drink deeply from the fountain of salvation! In that wonderful day you will sing: “Thank the LORD! Praise Your name!” Tell the nations what I have done. Let them know how mighty I AM! (Isaiah‬ ‭12‬:‭3-4‬ NLT) Feel free to add your name for mine.
That “wonderful day” is my today.
I believe God has not called us to merely survive life, but thrive.
I believe He has a calling for your existence right now.
I believe you have been created with unique abilities and passions that set you alive inside.
I believe this chapter could be your finest hour.
Why?
I’ve experienced it in my own journey. As a life coach, I’ve had the amazing experience walking this road with other survivors too. I’ve seen what happens when God grabs a survivor trying to get through the struggles of each day. God breathes in a new sense of life into me as I discovered my strengths, my values, what made me unique and how He set me apart. It is impossible to settle for life as a survivor once God shows you the fullness He promises a thriver.

  • Thrivers see each day filled with new opportunities
  • Thrivers know who they are and where they are going
  • Thrivers know their past chapters, but enjoy the chapter they are in right now
  • Thrivers can’t help but want others to experience the fullness of life they live-out!
Surviving is boring (even if I’m stuck with the last name!).
Thriving is beyond exciting, it’s worth living for each and everyday!
Thank God there is more!
Dare to do more than just survive. Stand-out and thrive!

Yes! Awesome post, Bethany. Why do we want to simply survive, when God has so much more for us? I love your words here. I will be sharing this on my Facebook page today to encourage my readers with your words!
