Our word today is LONG

“So he returned home to his father. And while he was still a long way off, his father saw him coming. Filled with love and compassion, he ran to his son, embraced him, and kissed him. (Luke 15:20 NLT)

As I walked along the dusty path, my mind whirled through what I could possibly say to make this situation any better. I knew I had to return home, even if I could never be accepted as part of this family anymore. How could I ever be seen as even human to them? I’m scared. I’m alone. I’m extremely vulnerable. I am the prodigal son…and I’m sure you’ve worn his sandals too.

You see, we get so caught-up in this fast-paced, self-help, quick-fix cycle that we are lost longer than what we realize. It’s like taking my dare-devil boys to the beach. As they lotion-up, I know I need extra sunblock too. Why? Because I’ll be the one standing right by the shoreline, trying to bring them closer as the waves continue to drift them away, repeatedly. A mom can only watch her babies float away so many times. I’ve been known to jump in and guide them back in the direction of our slowly leaning and faded beach umbrella.

But they have a choice. They can follow my directions and choose to listen to my voice above the waves, or be carried away by the current to a place they don’t want to be.

Sometimes, when we realize how incredibly lost we are, we risk losing something so much greater. We lose our identity. When we forget Who we belong to, we forget we can always be found.

We forget our Abba runs –

To us.

For us.

With us.

No matter how long we may feel away from Him.

No matter where you are today let Abba whisper –

My Child, you have the power to understand, as all My children should, how wide, how long, how high, and how deep My love is. (Ephesians 3:18)

You are never too far away for Him to find you, as you are and walk with you the long way Home.

5 Minute Friday is a weekly challenge for bloggers to write for (you guessed it) 5 minutes on a given word. No editing. No deleting (it’s HARD!). I tied this into my “Whispers With Abba” series for October. If you would like to join me and other amazing 5 minute freewriting friends, please visit Kate’s blog and linkup!

I loved teaching this parable to the ladies in my Bible study a few years back (we were serving as missionaries in Niger). The women were mostly illiterate and when we got to the part about the father running to meet the son who’d disgraced him… and those women tried to imagine a dignified businessmen from their culture doing the same… it was super powerful.

Great write!

I love to study the Word with a good concordance – working my way word through word through the text. I’ve been studying the book of John that way (I’m in chapter 10) now for two years! ๐Ÿ™‚

    Bethany says October 17, 2014

Oh yes…I’m right there with you! I study with a good dictionary, commentary and other resources by my side! I haven’t found a favorite…yet…

I’m so thankful our Father runs to meet us no matter how long we’ve been gone or how far away we went! Thanks for this great worship thought this morning!

    Bethany says October 17, 2014

    Thanks for the encouragement Carol!

So o time Bethany! I REALLY lost my temper at the roofer on Wednesday. I have felt lost ever since because I knew my behavior didn’t reflect Jesus. Satan got the best of me. This morning I made amends, I had to do it in an email so I didn’t mess it up but I feel like I am home again in my Abba’s loving arms!

    Bethany says October 17, 2014

Proud of you for making amends…that’s hard. I believe all of us struggle with this! You made a Best Yes choice!

Shannon Freeman says October 17, 2014

For 11 years I had fallen away from church and following God. Now I wasn’t to a point where I was into drugs or anything like that, church just wasn’t a priority. I worked Sundays and my husband and I couldn’t agree on a church to go to since he grew up in a Catholic church and myself in a non-denominational church. It wasn’t until he was PCS’d with the Air Force to FL that we found our Faith Family here. For the last 4 years we have become members of our church and have taken on leadership positions. My husband and I have grown closer together because of it. It was all a God thing! Even though I was far from my Father, He took me back 11 years later with His arms open wide!! Such a GREAT love He has for us!!!

    Bethany says October 17, 2014

    Shannon –
This is such a POWERFUL story! Thank you for sharing! What a transformation He is actively doing in your life!

Shannon Freeman says October 17, 2014

My Favorite way to do a Bible study is with others. That way I have someone else that I can speak to and see how they inturpret what we are reading. They might see something I miss ๐Ÿ™‚

    Bethany says October 17, 2014

I totally understand the visual interpretation aspect! It’s nice to know you are thinking the same as someone else!

Mary Hill says October 17, 2014

I love this image of God longing for us a father with arms wide open. I also love your scripture on how high, how long, and how deep His love is for me.

Thanks for sharing.

Mary Hill says October 17, 2014

I not using a Bible study per say write now. I am looking up words in my concordance and seeing where the Lord will take me.

    Bethany says October 17, 2014
